Dalam ajaran Islam, hutang-piutang adalah muamalah yang dibolehkan, tapi diharuskan untuk ekstra hati-hati dalam menerapkannya. Karena utang bisa mengantarkan seseorang ke dalam surga, dan sebaliknya juga bisa menjerumuskan seseorang ke dalam api neraka.
Meskipun berhutang itu boleh, hanya saja Islam menyuruh umatnya agar menghindari hutang semaksimal mungkin jika ia mampu membeli dengan tunai atau tidak dalam keadaan kesempitan ekonomi. Karena menurut Rasulullah shallallahu alaihi wasallam, hutang itu dapat menimbulkan pengaruh buruk dan bencana bagi pelakunya di dunia dan akhirat. Diantaranya:
1. Hutang merupakan penyebab kesedihan di malam hari, dan kehinaan di siang hari.
2. Hutang dapat membahayakan akhlaq. Maksudnya dapat menimbulkan perilaku yang buruk bagi orang yang suka (hoby) berhutang, seperti suka berdusta dan ingkar janji.
» Hal ini berdasarkan sabda Rasulullah shallallahu alaihi wasallam (yang artinya): “Sesungguhnya seseorang apabila berhutang, maka dia sering berkata lantas berdusta, dan berjanji lantas memungkiri.” (HR. Al-Bukhari).
3. Tanggungan Hutang Yang Dibawa Mati Tidak Akan Diampuni Oleh Allah Pada Hari Kiamat.
» Hal ini berdasarkan sabda Rasulullah shallallahu alaihi wasallam:
يُغْفَرُ لِلشَّهِيدِ كُلُّ ذَنْبٍ إِلاَّ الدَّيْنَ
“Semua dosa orang yang mati syahid Akan diampuni (oleh Allah), kecuali hutangnya.” (HR. Muslim III/1502 no.1886, dari jalan Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘Ash radhiyallahu ‘anhu).
» Dan juga berdasarkan hadits yang diriwayatkan dari Abu Qatadah radhiyallahu ‘anhu, bahwasannya Rasulullah pernah berdiri di tengah-tengah para sahabat, lalu Beliau mengingatkan mereka bahwa Jihad di jalan Allah dan iman kepada-Nya adalah amalan yang paling afdhol (utama). Kemudian berdirilah seorang sahabat, lalu bertanya, “Wahai Rasulullah, bagaimana pendapatmu jika aku gugur di jalan Allah, apakah dosa-dosaku akan terhapus dariku?” Maka jawab Rasulullah shallallahu alaihi wasallam kepadanya: “Ya, jika engkau gugur di jalan Allah dalam keadaan sabar mengharapkan pahala, maju pantang melarikan diri.” Kemudian Rasulullah bersabda: “Kecuali hutang (tidak akan diampuni/dihapuskan oleh Allah, pent), karena sesungguhnya Jibril ’alaihissalam menyampaikan hal itu kepadaku.” (HR. Muslim III/1501 no: 1885, At-Tirmidzi IV/412 no:1712, dan an-Nasa’i VI: 34 no.3157)
4. Orang Yang Mati Dalam Keadaan Memiliki Hutang Akan Terhalang Dan Tertunda Dari Masuk Surga.
» Hal ini berdasarkan hadits shohih yang diriwayatkan dari Tsauban, mantan budak Rasulullah, bahwa Rasulullah shallallahu alaihi wasallam bersabda:
« مَنْ فَارَقَ الرُّوحُ الْجَسَدَ وَهُوَ بَرِىءٌ مِنْ ثَلاَثٍ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ مِنَ الْكِبْرِ وَالْغُلُولِ وَالدَّيْنِ »
“Barangsiapa yang rohnya berpisah dari jasadnya (baca: meninggal dunia)dalam keadaan terbebas dari tiga hal, niscaya ia akan masuk surga, yaitu:
(1) Bebas dari sombong,
(2) Bebas dari khianat, dan
(3) Bebas dari tanggungan HUTANG.” (HR. Ibnu Majah)
» Dan juga berdasarkan hadits yang diriwayatkan dari Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu ‘anhu, bahwa Rasulullah shallallahu alaihi wasallam bersabda:
« نَفْسُ الْمُؤْمِنِ مُعَلَّقَةٌ بِدَيْنِهِ حَتَّى يُقْضَى عَنْهُ »
“Jiwa orang mukmin bergantung pada hutangnya hingga dilunasi.” (HR. Ibnu Majah II/806 no.2413, dan At-Tirmidzi III/389 no.1078).
5. Pahala Kebaikan Orang Yang Mati Dalam Keadaan Berhutang Akan Menjadi Tebusan Bagi Hutangnya Pada Hari Kiamat.
» Hal ini berdasarkan hadits shohih yang diriwayatkan dari Ibnu Umar radhiyallahu ‘anhu, bahwa Rasulullah shallallahu alaihi wasallam bersabda:
« مَنْ مَاتَ وَعَلَيْهِ دِينَارٌ أَوْ دِرْهَمٌ قُضِىَ مِنْ حَسَنَاتِهِ لَيْسَ ثَمَّ دِينَارٌ وَلاَ دِرْهَمٌ »
Artinya: “Barangsiapa meninggal dunia dalam keadaan menanggung hutang satu Dinar atau satu Dirham, maka dibayarilah (dengan diambilkan) dari kebaikannya; karena di sana tidak ada lagi Dinar dan tidak (pula) Dirham.”. (HR. Ibnu Majah II/807 no: 2414)
Demikianlah beberapa pengaruh buruk dan bahaya berhutang yang akan menimpa pelakunya di dunia dan akhirat.
Dan bahaya berhutang akan semakin dahsyat apabila terkandung di dalamnya unsur riba (baca: bunga) meskipun hanya sedikit, 0,1 %. Atau bilamana seseorang ketika berhutang kpd orang lain, di dalam hatinya ia telah berniat tidak akan melunasi hutangnya, atau bersengaja mengulur-ulur pelunasan hutangnya yang telah jatuh tempo. Karena perbuatan semacam ini adalah bentuk kezholiman kepada orang lain yang akan membinasakan pelakunya dan menjadi kegelapan baginya pada hari Kiamat.
